Profitable is relative to what your time is worth, I guess. I suppose some people would be happy with $10/hr, but I get paid 10 times that for writing software, and my current goal in life is to spend *less* time at my computer!
The videos I shot of the ladies in mud always grossed a lot of money. That’s how I paid for the clay in my clay pit, DVD mastering, and of course the actresses themselves (and crew). I generally came out pretty good, unless the model gave me a terrible performance.
I don’t think I’m interested in coordinating shoots with women anymore, because that brings it’s own set of problems, I don’t get to just enjoy myself in the swamp, and I still don’t make more money than I make in my day job, once you factor everything in.
In a nutshell, I’ll probably keep shooting at least parts of my muddy adventures, and when I get around to editing them and publishing them, anyone who wants to can purchase them. I do have a very small customer base, though. I’ve got dozens, probably over a hundred videos that have sold fewer than 3 copies. Considering that I get 60% of the selling price, I often net less than $10 on a clip. Just assembling the teaser and promo image and setting the clip up on C4S probably takes an hour. If I edit for an hour, I’m down to $5/hr. The fun part for me is the actual adventure. It’s nice to share my trips with like minded folks, but editing clips to sell is definitely something I could live without doing.
