Today I set out early and packed leather shorts for a different look. The tide was not as low as it could have been, but it was low enough for what I had planned. Of course, nothing ever goes exactly to plan, but this trip was pretty close to clockwork.
I killed some time, catching minnows to use as bait, before the tide was all the way out. Then I killed more time, trying to catch a fish, while making my way to the chosen sinking spot. Once I arrived at the mud, I had to change into my leather shorts and figure out how I was going to shoot an interesting video.
Once I got into the mud and started shooting, I tried to keep it interesting. I moved the camera a few times, I changed positions a lot, and I rubbed myself often. When the tide started coming back in, I got out and got some video of the preliminary cleanup.
After getting most of the mud off and changing back into my fishing clothes, I went back to fishing. The tide was coming in fast and the fish were jumpy. I tried a couple different lures, and I got lucky and landed a pretty good sized flounder. That was enough for dinner, so I paddled on back to the car and headed for home.
It was another nice day, I got close to an hour of mud play, and I caught fresh fish for dinner. One can’t ask for much more. I suppose it would have been nice to have had a partner with whom to share the trip, but then I would have had to catch another fish!
Loving those leather lace up shorts! Great mud gear!
i was out today (Tuesday) in my kayak and had a similar issue as you mentioned in your “Kayaking at low tide” post, in that the low tide wasn’t supposed to get that low, and then on top of that the wind only added to the height of the tide as low tide approached. it was nearly sunset, but because the moon is so full, I thought I would hang out on the water to see if the wind would die down… Right at sunset the wind stop completely and I just watched the tide drain out SO fast I could see vast areas of mud surface all around me! I ended out having an awesome time sinking into all different kinds of mud!
Got in a great paddle under the moonlight on my way back and stopped once or twice to play in some other surprisingly exposed areas… Couldn’t believe how warm it was once that wind stopped! So strange the challenges we face in order to get into deep mud! Worth it, of course! 🙂
Thanks for the report, Mudsleuth. I have never seen the tide go out at the last minute. I am always out until it starts coming back in. I also don’t hang around after dusk; there are just too many hungry looking alligators hanging around. 🙂
It sounds like you had a good time. I’m going to try to get out one more time before the moon is full.
