Staying Cool in the Heat

Posted by on June 14, 2026

I went out on the estuary yesterday to avoid the heat by getting wet and immersed in mud. Getting wet was pretty easy. Getting muddy was also effortless, but avoiding the biting flies turned out to be impossible unless I was completely immersed in the mud.

I arrived before low tide so my first order of business was cooling off in the creek (pictured on the left). After that, I went to where I would be getting immersed and I tried shooting a short self-bondage tutorial. That didn’t quite go as planned, but it wasn’t a complete loss.

After shooting my tutorial, I took out a hammer, of sorts, that I brought with me to drive my 4×4 deeper into the mud, in the hope that it would get tightly lodged so I could not pull it back up. I wasn’t able to do that, but I had fun trying … at least as long as I could stay deep enough in the mud to avoid the biting flies.

I put together a short video with some of the encounters I had with flies that got caught on camera (that is encounters that got caught; not flies). Personally, I find this video hard to watch, but I think it’s important to show, in the interest of science.
